LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Election Day is Tuesday and it is expected to be a long busy day at the polls. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
UPDATE: As of 5:55 p.m., the total number of votes for Tippecanoe County was 33,879. That number started piling up as soon as voters began casting ballots early in October.
In Tippecanoe County, one of the busiest sites is expected to be the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds. Tippecanoe County Clerk Christa Coffey told News 18 she expects around 43,000 people to vote on Election Day. Tippecanoe County is a "vote center" county, meaning registered voters can cast their ballot at any of the 19 vote center site. A list of the vote centers can be found online on the Tippecanoe County government website . Just click on the vote button.
In most other counties, voters must go to a designated precinct. You can find your precinct through the Indiana Voters website.
In Indiana, state law requires you to show a government-issued photo I.D. in order to cast your ballot. If you do not have one, all state BMV branches will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday. If you forget your photo I.D. you will be able to vote a provisional ballot and bring your I.D. later for your vote to be counted.
Tippecanoe County Clerk Christa Coffey says there's always some confusion over the vote center concept.
"Some are still looking for the postcard in the mail and we haven't done those at all this year,” Coffey said.
And voters sounded off as well.
"It's scary what's going to happen to the nation if we don't get rid of this gridlock and start moving and start working for the people instead of for the individual politicians,” Joyce Van Cleef said. “So I thought my vote was extremely important this year."
"I did follow the issues quite a bit and I did have my opinions I wanted to vote on,” Christopher Ritter said. “But as always, I feel it is our patriotic duty."
