LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Saturday is National Drug Take Back Day, and the Indiana State Police in Lafayette were available Saturday morning to take your unwanted prescription drugs.

Anyone could drop off expired or unused prescription drugs free of charge, with no questions asked.

State police said the nationwide "Drug Take Back" event is a huge success, and said the number of people bringing in unwanted drugs continues to grow.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Kim Riley said the main goal of Saturday's event was to get the drugs out of the hands of young children.

"People don't realize that even though they have childproof caps on that medication, they still can chew on it and get it open," said Sgt. Riley. "Some of them are the rip off bags, so they can always get in to them."

The Drug take back event lasted until 2:00 Saturday afternoon, but police said you can drop off drugs at your local police station at any time.
