Police: Driver lucky to have only minor injuries after foggy wreck

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WlFI) - A mini van ended up underneath a semi truck after a Wednesday morning wreck in Tippecanoe County.

"Everyone is very lucky in this case," Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Deputy Rob Rush said.

Despite the wreckage the driver of the van was the only person injured. He was taken to IU Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette with just minor cuts and bruises.

Rush said the semi was trying to turn left onto U.S. 52 from State Road 28 to go south. When he pulled out he hit the northbound traveling van. Rush said this could've been avoided on a clearer day.

"[The] fog had everything to do with this crash," Rush said. "If you can't see 40 or 50 yards in front of your car you shouldn't be driving 50 miles an hour."

It was a high pressure system that kept the moisture at the surface and kept the fog around longer. It would usually break by mid morning. But Wednesday's fog kept the area under a dense fog advisory until the afternoon.

"It was a complete wall," Meteorologist Cameron Hopman said of the fog. "[It was] some of the most dense fog I've ever seen"

Hopman said fog is common as the seasons change, but admits Wednesday's fog was unusual.

"[High pressure systems] are supposed to clear things out," Hopman said. "In this case we have the complete opposite situation. The high has now moved over our area because we had all the moisture at the surface early this morning. It's almost acting like a dome. It's keeping that moisture at the surface."

While the fog is expected to stay away for a while, Rush said to always take the fog seriously.

"Slow down and pay attention, and give yourself a lot of extra time," Rush said about driving in the fog.

The driver of the semi was not hurt and was able to drive off.
