Police continue search for hot trucks

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - State police continue their search for hot trucks. This week, four hot trucks were caught in just four days.

Saturday, another truck, this one carrying 37,000 pounds of cheese, was almost cited. Indiana State trooper Nate King stopped the semi truck, and said the temperatures inside the truck were at 40 degrees.

At 41 degrees, dairy can start growing unsafe bacteria. King told the driver to put his refrigerator back on to cool the truck. When he came back to check, he said the temperature had cooled down enough for a safe transport.
 
King said they like to see if trucks have a working refrigerator before getting rid

"We're not out here to trash loads, we're out here to see if they're in compliance and no one is getting sick," said King. "So, we will give them every benefit of the doubt. When you find something that isn't working mechanically, and it's not going to work mechanically and you find the food isn't the way it should be, then we have the problems."

The final destination of this particular truck is Tennessee. In March, a law was passed making it a misdemeanor if it is proven someone knowingly transported food unsafely.
