Police consider bank robber armed and dangerous

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Lafayette police said a man walked into the Chase Bank on Teal Road and demanded money around 1:30 Friday afternoon.

"A white male walked into the bank, displayed a handgun and robbed Chase Bank at gunpoint," said Lafayette Police Sergeant Bob Baumgartner.

Officers describe the white male suspect as about 5 feet 5 inches tall, between 30 and 50 years of age. At the time of the robbery, he was wearing aviator sunglasses, a pink bandana, a grey or dark hooded sweatshirt and green camouflage pants.

Investigators said he ran off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

"We attempted a track of the suspect with the assistance of Tippecanoe County's K-9 unit," said Baumgartner. "The track went all the way to Georgetown Apartments, and at that point, there was so much foot traffic there that we lost track and were unable to determine where he went from that point."

Police said at the time of the robbery, nine bank tellers and four customers were inside the building. Nobody was hurt and no shots were fired.
    
"At this point, anyone that's willing to go into a bank with a handgun and display the handgun and rob a bank is going to be considered armed and dangerous," said Baumgartner. "So, if anybody would happen to see somebody matching the description, we'd ask that they call the police, and not approach him themselves."

The Chase Bank was closed for the remainder of the afternoon. Police believe it will reopen for business Saturday morning.
