People head to local bars to watch the big game

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - Some preparation starts in the kitchen. Other preps start at the bar on Super Bowl Sunday.

"[The day is sad] because football is over, but it's the best because it's the Super Bowl," Don Kirby, owner of Lafayette's DT Kirby's, said. "We'll be full for a Sunday night. We'll be full all night long."

Local restaurant and bar owners said they get big crowds and big orders on Super Bowl Sunday.

"[There are] orders going out around noon," General Manager of Buffalo Wild Wings in West Lafayette Jen Schulfer said. "[The orders are for] over a hundred wings. Starting around 3 [in the afternoon] it gets really crazy. There are nonstop orders."

At DT Kirby's some people don't even come for the game. Instead they're looking for a good time, and maybe a game of bags.

"We kind of have traditions," Kirby said. "We do beer pong outside, we have bags. People come in. They're arguing about what commercials are going to be next or who is going to throw the first interception. So the football game is almost third on the list."

Schulfer said she is expecting more people this year compared to last year when Indianapolis hosted the Super Bowl.

"[Last year] we were still busy with to-go orders," Schulfer said. "We weren't as full inside because people were down in Indy partying."

Kirby said Sunday's snow wouldn't keep people from coming out.

"There are a lot of die-hards for tailgating," Kirby said. "If Purdue played today at home we'd be out there no doubt."

For the next several years people will pack Lafayette and West Lafayette bars to watch the game. However, in 2018 they may head back down to Indianapolis. The city is trying to get the bid to host that year's Super Bowl.
