TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - Parents of Klondike Elementary students learned a little more Tuesday night about how important it is to read with their children outside of school.
About 30 parents and their children gathered for the school's annual Read and Rise event. The event aims to educate parents on how crucial it is to promote literacy at home and how to do it successfully.
Some good tips include reading to your child every night, asking your child questions while they're reading, and having your child read to you on a regular basis. Through practice and time spent with parents, kids can see reading as fun and develop a passion for it.
"Children need to make sure that their parents are involved in their education and they need to see that their parents are interested in what they're learning at school. The best thing you can do is involve your families with literacy," said Assistant Principal Jenny Hollingsworth.
The families at Tuesday night's event got to create their own book and choose one to have to add to their library at home.
