LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A Marine who is also a 1996 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School is recovering after a military exercise turned deadly Monday in Nevada.

According to Keavy West, her husband, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Ryan West, was injured Monday night in a mortar shell explosion that killed seven Marines.

The explosion occurred at the Hawthorne Army Depot, a facility used by troops heading overseas, during an exercise involving the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Keavy says 35-year-old Ryan is currently in a Nevada hospital with non-critical injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

The United States Marine Corps is not releasing any information about the identities of the unit or of other people involved at this time.
