LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - There will soon be a new option in downtown living, and the city of Lafayette wants to know what you think it should look like.

The Lafayette Redevelopment Commission is accepting proposals from private developers and residents for the sale and redevelopment of the property formerly known as Midwest Rentals.

Project Manager Margy Deverall said community members can log onto the website and vote on what they would like to see occupy the space. Deverall said the city wants 14 to 18 townhomes built there.

She said the exterior of the townhomes will match the historic architecture of downtown Lafayette and said living downtown has its perks.

"You can walk to dinner, you can walk to public transportation, you can walk to church, you can walk to the Y," said Deverall. "There's any number of services and businesses that are so easy accessible."

The property is located at 506 Brown Street, just north of downtown Lafayette. The property sits on less than one acre of land.

Deverall said construction could start in 2013 and said the townhomes could cost between $150,000 to $250,000.

To vote, visit the historic townhomes website .
