New mail carriers working without a uniform

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Postal workers are saying there shouldn't be any cause for concern if you see your mail deliverer out of uniform.

USPS spokesperson, Mary Dando, said these workers are new hires. They are being put on a route immediately, but are waiting for their uniforms.

"As you can imagine, in any situation, especially when people wear a uniform, it's just [takes] a little bit of time from the transition from the academy to working on the streets regularly," Dando says.

There is a way to make sure your mail carrier is legitimate. Some may be out of uniform, but all will wear a USPS hat. It will have the USPS eagle on it.

"If anyone has any concerns, that's what what they need to look for," Dando said. "[It's] our eagle, the U.S. Postal Service eagle."

Dando said it's important to get the new hires out quick. Right now, postal workers say more mail carriers are needed more than ever. The growing population and housing developments are producing more areas mail needs to be delivered to.

"At the moment, we have a great need for carriers," Dando said. "The important thing at the moment is that we have enough carriers out there delivering and collecting mail for our customers."

Postal workers want all customers to be aware of who is delivering their mail. It's a job, Dando said, that is held with great importance.

"Your mail is of upmost importance to us," Dando said. "We regard it as a sacred trust."

If USPS customers do have concerns, they should call their post office. Workers can confirm who should be delivering mail in your neighborhood.
