LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A major Lafayette employer is laying off dozens of workers, saying it’s all part of a new initiative.

The Tippecanoe Laboratories of the Evonik Degussa Corporation will be eliminating 45 employees, which is roughly 7 percent of its labor force.

It's part of a global strategy announcement today made by Evonik concerning several manufacturing sites of health care products.

According to the company's website, Tippecanoe Laboratories employs about 650 people to produce both cancer and veterinary drugs.

Company officials say today's move will help Evonik be more flexible and competitive.

Employees who are being laid off will be given a severance package.

Company officials provided a press release to News 18 but declined to do an interview.
