More Than a Resolution | Part 3: The Participants Weigh In

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - In the third installation of our special health series, we show the struggles and triumphs of Lafayette residents Jared Bond and Terri Staley as they begin their new lifestyles.

The journey to B.N. Shape began just two months ago for Jared Bond and Terri Staley.

With the diet plan ironed out, International Sports Club opened their doors for us to get active.

First, the weigh in. Jared weighed in at 296 pounds with a 51-inch waist. Terri weighed in at 309 pounds and a 59.5-inch waist.

Both admit to living unhealthy lives and were ready to hit the ground, elliptical and stairs running.

The first workout proved to be a big struggle.

"I had to go into the bathroom and throw up a little bit, but I feel better now and I'm ready to hit it again,” Jared said.

"It was hard. It's hard,” Terri said.

But the positive attitude, team work and true desire to change led to big achievements.

"I think now that I have an idea of where each of them are physically, I can start to tweak their exercises every day and make them a little bit harder and continue to challenge them as they get better with their workouts,” B.N. Shape Clothing Founder Dozie Onunkwo said.

"I'm just going to improve every single day, and I'm going to get in shape,” Jared said. “I'm ready for this lifestyle change, here we go!"

"I see it getting easier,” Terri said. “In a way, tougher, because I know Dozie will add harder exercises and add to the program, but I think I'll be able to breathe."

Terri must be a psychic, because that's what happened. The further Jared and Terri got into the program, the more intense the workouts got, but the more effortless they seemed.

On the first day, walking up one flight of steps led Terri to be out of breath and sweating. But after a just few weeks, She was unstoppable. In fact we gave her the nickname "Stairy."

"When we first started working out, I had to hold on to the rail to help pull myself up the steps, and then as soon as I got to the top, I was out of breath and I couldn't talk and couldn't breathe,” Terri said. “Now, I'm actually almost at a fast pace walking up the steps. I'm even trying to push and run up the steps a little bit. I'm not sure if I'm going to make it, but that's why I'm pushing. "

Terri's exercise plan consisted of many things you can do at home including squats, shuffles and stairs.

Jared's workout plan consisted of weight training and more intense cardio.

Our first workouts left Jared out of breath and struggling to finish. After just a few weeks, Jared was all over the place.

Our chapter of involvement in the journey for Terri and Jared to be in shape was only two months long, but the results were real.

Here’s what Onunkwo had to say when Terri weighed in.

"Going from 309 pounds, she dropped down to 286 pounds, and not only that she lost 5 inches off her waist and 2 inches off her chest, so that's a significant loss after such a short amount of time. Congratulations Terri! 23 pounds!"

A healthy diet and exercise are the two main components that will lead you to B.N. Shape, but you need more than that. You need consistency.

Combined with muscle gain, Jared lost 6 pounds and 2 inches off of his waist which is wonderful, but he says there were a few setbacks.

"I think some of it was the diet wasn't always so strict,” Jared said. “I was trying to stick to it, but I wasn't always strict. People need to remember that it's an every day and every meal kind of thing to stick to it."

The road to “B.N. Shape” isn't over for Jared and Terri. It's a life-long commitment they say they are both willing to make.
