Monon waitress becomes a children's book author

FRANCESVILLE, Ind. (WLFI) - Amber Dulin read her book "Wilma the Waitress and the Waffle Shop" to her family Sunday afternoon. Dulin said she told herself she would write a children's book one day. That day came in January 2012.

Dulin is a waitress at Monon's Whistle Stop Restaurant. She came up with idea for "Wilma the Waitress and the Waffle House" one day at work.

"I started to write down a little at a time on my order pad as I worked," Dulin said.

A year after she started her draft on her order pad the book was released. Tate Publishing released the book on Feb. 18.

Wilma plays a waitress in the book. However, Dulin said Wilma is not that good, and gets in trouble.

"She has a lot of mishaps in the book," Dulin said. "Her mop bucket overflows and her hair catches on fire."

Wilma ends up leaving her job to try something new. Dulin said she is a better waitress than Wilma, but the book's moral is based on her life.

"It's kind of like my life story," Dulin said. "I love being a waitress and I love my job. But at the same time it's not something I want to do forever, and I always felt like [writing children's books] is what I was supposed to do. It's kind of like a you can do anything you want story."

Dulin said she is recording an audio book this year. Then she will continue her "Wilma" series. She said she has written four books. In each one Wilma has a different job. Her second book is about to go into production.

"Wilma the Waitress and the Waffle House" is being sold on major book websites like Amazon and Barnes and Nobel.
