Middle school community remembers former student and fallen soldier

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - It was a night to remember at Wainwright middle school as the community remembered a fallen soldier.

Lafayette native and Army Sergeant Kyle Osborn was killed last week while serving in Afghanistan. He was a McCutcheon graduate as well as a former Wainwright Mustang.

His younger sister, Katlyn, is currently a cheerleader at Wainwright.
    
To support Katlyn and the rest of Kyle's family, fans wore red, white and blue ribbons at Thursday night's 7th and 8th Grade football games. The cheerleaders wore red, white and blue ribbons in their hair. Just before kick off, the Osborn family took the field for a moment of silence.

The crowd looked on as the family mourned the loss of their loved one.
    
Wainwright faculty members said the support from the school and community has been incredible.

"We have been able to try and provide some meals for the family, we've been wearing our read, white and blue in honor of them, and we know it's a long road and we're just here to support as much as we can," said Principal Neil McCutcheon.

"She has seemed to be doing really, really well coming back. her friends have been really supportive of her and I think that's really helped her," said Megan Gordon, Katlyn's cheerleading coach.

McCutcheon said Katlyn has been in high spirits ever since she returned to school earlier this week. He said it's rewarding to see how close a community can become during a time of need.
