LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Two dozen kids were treated to an early Christmas Tuesday evening in Lafayette.
Toys "R" Us was the site of the annual "Shop with the Mayor" event. In the ninth edition of the event, 24 children got the chance to shop alongside Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski to pick out gifts for the holidays. Each child had $100 to spend.
Mayor Roswarski said there's usually a few that like to do some giving themselves.
"It's wonderful, I see kids smile and laugh," Roswarski. "I've seen kids get their first bicycle, I see kids buy presents for other family members that they think might not get something. Kids buy hats and clothes for themselves and other family members. It's really a special program for a lot of different reasons. The kids actually do some pretty neat things, too, besides just pick out their presents."
Organizers collected names from various groups like the Boys and Girls Club and the Hanna Community Center. Funds were raised from community donations and a golf tournament in October.
