Manufacturer warns of higher utility bills

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - An area manufacturer has warned about a dozen Lafayette residents of higher electric bills.

Tate & Lyle officials held their semi-annual meeting Thursday with residents as part of a city-mandated agreement to get property tax abatements several years ago.

Odor is still the biggest complaint, but residents said they have noticed problems have decreased recently.

"We appreciate our neighbors bringing those to our attention because it helps us facilitate making improvements to those issues," said spokesperson Chris Olsen.

Officials also warned residents about Senate Bill 560 which is currently under consideration in the Indiana House. Olsen said it would give utilities more power to recover costs for their services.

He said energy is the second highest cost for their Indiana plants and with increasingly uncompetitive prices it makes it harder for Indiana plants to compete with plants in other states for possible expansion projects. He added if people are concerned about their electric bills going up, they should contact their area representative.
