LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a tree stand accident that occurred around 8 Saturday morning in northern Tippecanoe County.

50-year-old John Chadwell told investigators he was climbing a tree that had a tree stand, when the stand broke off of the tree, causing him to fall approximately 15 feet to the ground.

Chadwell sustained significant injuries and was transported to IU Health Arnett Hospital.

Investigators said the straps securing the tree stand to the tree were severely rusted.

Chadwell's son told investigators that the tree stand had been left out in the elements from the previous season.

Chadwell was wearing a full-body tree stand safety harness, but was not tethered to the tree at the time of the fall.
