Officers honored for efforts after July crash

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Two Lafayette police officers were presented the silver merit award Wednesday afternoon.

Officers Heath Provo and Shana Wainscott were presented the award, which is given to officers for their bravery and dedication to serving the community.

On July 4, a man was pinned under a truck after a wreck near the intersection of Sagamore Parkway and Greenbush Street in Lafayette.

Provo and Wainscott were able to lift the truck, and with the help of bystanders, pull the man out from under the vehicle.

Both officers said getting the award means a lot.

“It's very special to me. A lot of officers go their whole career without getting one, so it means a lot. It's a great honor to be awarded with this,” said Officer Provo.

Officer Wainscott said, “It's definitely one of those awards where we don't get them very often, so when you do get honored with it, it is a pleasure to get honored with it. I hope that more officers can get honored with it in the future.”

Merit award winners are chosen by the Merit Commission, which is made up of local citizens.
