LPD begins incorporating Dodge Chargers to fleet

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The Lafayette Police Department is set to have a new look while out on the streets very soon.

LPD has begun moving from the discontinued Ford Crown Victoria Interceptors to Dodge Chargers.    

The first Charger could be on the streets as early as Thursday and more will be phased in as necessary.

Over the summer, LPD also evaluated new models from Ford and Chevy before eventually choosing the Charger.

Police Chief Don Roush anticipates long-term savings by choosing the Charger due to increased fuel efficiency.

"I can tell you that in fuel alone, a Crown Victoria - the older model - may get 9 miles per gallon. This will push 16, hopefully up to 20," said Roush.

Also noticeable on the new Chargers are the graphics.

The old black-and-yellow color scheme has been replaced to give the cars a more cohesive look between them, the LPD website and their facility in downtown Lafayette.
