BATTLE GROUND, Ind. (WLFI) - River the dog was found by the Wolf Park interns after last Saturday's severe storms.
The interns believe the pup was scared by the storms or fireworks displays over the weekend and ran to hide where she would be safe. At first the dog refused to come out of a large thicket of trees, but with some coaxing from Rachel Vanausdall the dog came out of hiding, and she's been a fixture at Vanausdall's side ever since. She said it was lucky River made her temporary home at a place where the staff was well-versed in canine behavior.
"We take baby steps. We don't want to force her to do anything she doesn't want to do. She's in an unfamiliar situation. Here we get to learn about, not only wolf behavior, but dog behavior. So we can kind of look at their facial expression, and their body posture and see if she's getting nervous or something," said Vanausdall.
Vanausdall and her friends are still looking for the dog's owner, and won't be able to keep her at the park.
Anyone with information about River's owners can call (765) 844-2288.
