Voters wait in long lines at the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds on Election Day

Fairgrounds is expected to be busy all day long

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The polls opened in Tippecanoe County on Tuesday for Election Day without any major problems, but long lines persist at the County Fairgrounds.

Tippecanoe County Clerk Christa Coffey said some issues did surface with voters not having their registration current or processed. Coffey said all polls opened on time.

Between 6 and 7 a.m., there was a steady stream at the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds is expected to be one of the busiest vote centers on Election Day. Coffey said that was due to the fact they had so many voting machines. About two dozen were up and running that morning.

Only a few voters were casting their ballots at a time; the long line was at the check-in table where voters had to show their government-issued photo I.D. A poll worker would then check their registration status before voters were given a white card. Voters then inserted the card into the voting machine and their proper ballot with candidates in their respective districts would appear.

Once at the voting machine, it seemed to take most voters only approximately 5-10 minutes to cast their ballot.

The Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds is one of many vote center sites throughout Tippecanoe County where voters can go on Election Day. For a list of all vote center sites, check out the Tippecanoe County government website and click on the "vote" icon.
