LOGANSPORT, Ind (WLFI) - Representatives from the National Weather Service and Cass County Emergency Management surveyed damage in Cass County.
A barn was destroyed east of Logansport.
EMA Director Alvin Beckman said there was evidence that it was indicative of straight-line winds. Trees were down and corn damaged around County Road 450 East and 150 South.
"We had debris right around a mile away from the barn. We've got metal from that barn right at a mile away. We even have an area where we have a 2-by-6 from that structure, about a mile away, stuck into the ground," said Beckman.
"In this particular area, we have strong indications of very strong winds, probably on the order of about 60 to 80 mile an hour," said National Weather Service meteorologist Michael Lewis. "Some of the tree damage, and some of the structural damage that I'm seeing indicates that we're probably pushing that 70 mile an hour wind damage mark."
Lewis said severe weather can happen at any time.
"We've got to be ready for that. Monitor your local media stations, monitor your NOAA weather radio. Get that information and be ready to take action immediately."
The National Weather Service (NWS) stated on Thursday that there were no signs of rotation in Cass County, but that the damage was consistent with 75 mph straight line winds.
The NWS noted three particularly concentrated areas of damage.
The first was an entire barn was destroyed south of Lake Cicott, with debris blown over a mile away.
The second was an area located north of US 24 between Hayden Lane and Willow Woods, where trees were damaged and shingles were lifted from roofs. Winds here were estimated between 60 and 65 mph.
The third was located near the intersection of 450 East and 130
North. Tree damage and minor structural damage was seen in this
area, and winds may have reached as high as 75 mph.
