LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Two veterans received special recognition today at Wea Ridge Middle School.
They received medals for their service to our country.
"These two men wore the uniform and fought under the flag many
years ago. I express my disappointment - and accept my apology -
that your country didn't honor you sooner," said Congressman Steve
Buyer.
Corporal James Bellah served in the army during the Korean
War. Congressman Steve Buyer presented him with the Purple
Heart, Good Conduct Medal, and other awards.
"Today just puts so many memories. I had so many friends that I
was with and buddies that didn't make it back," said Bellah.
Among many awards, Private Charles Sallman received two
purple hearts. One for merit, the other for being injured by a land
mine. Sallman served in the army during World War II.
"I served in France. There was the going over and preparation and the battles we did fight in. And, luckily I got through them," said Sallman.
More than 30 other veterans attended the ceremony, along with community members, faculty and students.
"I thought it was just really great to be able to honor these people, because they have helped out so much and it obviously means so much to them that we could be here," said Grace Oppy.
"We should all have a celebration for all the veterans even though if they died or still living. We should all come together and just have a great big celebration," said Erika Keating.
Eighth grader Lydia Ausherman said she was glad her school could celebrate Veterans Day by honoring both Bellah and Sallman.
"I liked seeing how proud they were. They were really proud of themselves. And, they got a lot of awards and it was really special," said Lydia Ausherman.
