LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In Tippecanoe County, t-shirts decorated by domestic violence and sexual assault survivors are on display at Ivy Tech Community College. YWCA's goal for the Clothesline Project is to let people know that domestic violence is an issue locally.
Outreach Coordinator Jasmine Dowd said in 2008 the YWCA
sheltered 287 women and 250 children affected by domestic violence.
"It's really just a visual display, a reminder that domestic
violence does happen in our community and the shirts are done by
survivors and friends of survivors. So, it's just a visual
display for schools and people in the community to see," said
Dowd.
The Clothesline Project is free and open to the public. It will
be on display at Ivy Tech throughout October.
The YWCA is also holding several other events throughout the
month.
On Tuesday October 13th a program on how to support victims and
survivors of domestic violence will be held at the Riverside
Covenant Church from 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. That's at 1850
Woodland Avenue in West Lafayette.
Then on Thursday October 15th there will be a candlelight
vigil and march from the YWCA to Duncan Hall. That starts at
6:00 p.m. at the YWCA located at 605 North 6th Street in
Lafayette.
