LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Many people go to the eye doctor because of blurry vision. Cataracts could be the cause. Symptoms include trouble with glare or difficulty with night driving. The sight problem mostly effects the elderly, but younger people can get them if they've had trauma or take steroids. Clarian Arnett Health Ophthalmologist Kuumba Long said cataract removal used to require major surgery. The procedure is now quicker and less painful.
"Now with advanced technology the surgery takes 10-15 minutes. We actually don't put patients to sleep and we use a small incision for cataract surgery," said Dr. Long.
The surgery is like cleaning a dirty window. Ophthalmologists like Dr. Long take a tool like a vacuum cleaner to clear the lens or an artificial lens can be inserted. Premium cataract surgery also allows the doctor to take your glasses and put the lens inside your eye.
"We actually offer different types of lens that allow you to see up close and far away," said Long.
The surgery does have some risks, including blindness, but side effects are minimal.
"It's one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the country and one with the lowest amount of risk factors," explained Long.
Vision must be 20-50 or worse to have cataract surgery. Most patients see 20-20 by the next day, letting them focus on life and not their vision.
