Local students raise $2K for Newtown

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A third grade class at an area elementary school popped popcorn for a good cause Wednesday morning.

After Friday's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., Kathy Wolf's third grade class at Cumberland Elementary in West Lafayette sold popcorn to other students to raise money.

The student's raised nearly $2,000 to send to Sandy Hook.

Wolf said they sold nearly 650 bags of popcorn to students and teachers at Cumberland Wednesday.

High school students, teachers, parents and even grandparents volunteered to fill bags and bring them to classes.

Wolf said the sale was a way for students and teachers at Cumberland to heal and give back after they had heard the news last week. 

"Whether it's a memory garden, a serenity garden, a bench or a book in the library," Cumberland Elementary School teacher Kathy Wolf said. "They're going to want to do something to remember the people that they lost.  This is just our way of giving them some funds to hopefully do something good."

"It makes me feel good because I'm doing something to change other people's lives," Cumberland third-grader Sarah Wilcoxson said. 

Wolf said ConAgra Foods in Brookston donated nearly 10 boxes of popcorn for today's sale.
