Local school holds practice career fair

Charter school pairs students with professionals

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Students at a Lafayette charter school paired up with professionals Tuesday in a Practice Career Fair.

Sixth and seventh graders at New Community School participated in the fair.

As part of their semester project, students had to pick a career path to pursue.

Professionals in those careers spoke with students about their jobs, and made time to interview the students.

Sixth and seventh grade teacher Rachael Smith says seeing her students choose careers requiring a college education is the most rewarding part of the project.

"Every field they chose requires some sort of college education," Smith said.  "Which is ultimately what I'm trying to encourage them to do.  To pursue something past high school.  And if it's something their interested in now, see that this is how you would make a living with a career and not just a series of jobs that pays the bills."

News 18's Jamie Jackson took part in the fair teaching one student about the daily life of a news anchor.
