WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The owner of one of the area's most popular pizza places is also the country's fastest pizza maker and box builder. He's getting national and international attention.

Most people can say the can make a pizza, but only David Sommers can say he can make a pizza faster than anyone else in the country.

He earned the title after competing in the 2012 U.S. Pizza Team Trials just a few weeks ago in late September.

Because of his accomplishments, Sommers is now the newest addition to the United States Pizza team.

He says it's a dream come true, and he thanks the local community for helping to make it happen.

"When we have our late nights after football games and stuff, I can really get it on the line," Mad Mushroom owner and country's fastest pizza maker David Sommers said. "Without the community's support, I wouldn't be able to get out there and practice and compete on a national level. "

Sommers won three awards at the 2012 U.S. Pizza Team Trials placing first in both fastest pizza making and box building.

"The first award is for the fastest pizza maker where I had to take the five 10 inch dough balls and stretch them out over a 12 inch screen as quickly as possible," Sommers said. " I had to fold five 14 inch boxes as quickly as possible."

Sommers is set to compete with the U.S. Pizza team next April in Italy.
