Library celebrates MLK Day

LAFAYETTE, IN (WLFI) - An annual celebration at the Tippecanoe County Public Library was held to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Martin Luther King, Jr., Celebration, held Monday at the Tippecanoe County Public Library, featured a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation, singing traditional African-American songs and two videos that featured African-American historical moments.

Keynote Speaker and Lafayette native Tandra Stovall spoke about taking Dr. King from the textbooks and into everyday life.

"One of the things I wanted to bring to attention is, kind of, lifting Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy out of the textbook, and trying to apply that to our real lives here in 2013," Stovall said.

"Making sure we not just celebrate Martin Luther King's legacy just on one day in January, but trying to extend that into a way of life and really just affording us to all the opportunities that have been given to us," said Stovall.

"As we look at the actual day, this has become a day of service," County Librarian at the Tippecanoe County Public Library Jos Holman said. "But as you're serving, do you still celebrate?  And what do you learn about Dr. King, and what he believed in and what he practiced, and what he has meant to other folks?"
