Leaky gas pipe leads to courthouse evacuation

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) - A strong gas smell that led to the evacuation of a north-central Indiana courthouse has been traced to a leaky natural gas pipe in the building's basement.

Firefighters and police officers evacuated the Miami County Courthouse on Thursday after courthouse workers who called 911 reported the building had a strong gas smell that was making them nauseous.

The Kokomo Tribune reports that a crew from Northern Indiana Public Service Co. found that a natural gas pipe in the building's basement had two gas leaks.

Workers shut off the gas inside the courthouse and made repairs at the building about 65 miles north of Indianapolis.

Assistant Peru Fire Chief John McMillen says the gas leaks were minor and there was no threat of an explosion.
