LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The City of Lafayette has announced its participation in Earth Hour.

This weekend city government will turn off all non-essential lighting for one hour.

It's part of a global initiative led by the World Wildlife Fund to bring awareness to the effects of climate change.

Millions are expected to participate in 7,000 towns and cities across 152 countries.

"I think we're just as important as those big cities are and we feel the same away a lot of those major communities do, and hats off to the mayor for being willing to put us out there and have the community partake in it," commented City Clerk Cindy Murray.

Mayor Tony Roswarski is asking resident to join the city in celebrating the event from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. this Saturday.

To show your concern about climate change all you have to do is turn off your non-essential lights for the hour.
