LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A Lafayette doctor is climbing 20,000 feet to help women with breast cancer.
Dr. Tom Summer, a general surgeon at Lafayette Surgical Clinic, will climb Mt. Kilimanjaro with his daughter Anna this September. Anna works in the public health field in Uganda.
Dr. Summer said he has always wanted to climb a mountain with his daughter and said the two decided to climb for a good cause. They hope to raise $6,000 to $7,000, which will go toward women's health care in both Lafayette and Africa.
"Mine will be directed to the YWCA, the BCCP program, which provides mammograms for underprivileged women," said Dr. Summer. "My daughter's funds will be directed to her organization in Uganda, which is also geared toward maternal health."
Summer and his family are selling T-shirts and hats for $20. He said they also will accept monetary donations.
Dr. Summer has a flag that he is having all of his patients sign and said he will carry that with him to the top of the mountain.
If you are interested in donating, you can stop by Dr. Summer's office or mail a check to Dr. Tom Summer, Attention: Nancy Grimes, 1345 Unity Place, Suite 235, Lafayette, IN, 47906.
