WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) -  Kids in a West Lafayette neighborhood got an early start to the July 4th festivities.

The annual Independence Day parade kicked off at 10:00 a.m. Monday morning.

Kids decorated their bicycles and paraded down Indian Trail Drive behind a West Lafayette fire truck.

Even man's best friend got a patriotic makeover.

Neighbors say the tradition is a great way to remember the nation's history, and have fun at the same time.

"I think this is a really great way for people to get together, get out and meet all their neighbors and hopefully have a little fun with the kids," said Thomas Brennan, who walked in the parade for the first time this year.

Jim Walker, a veteran of two wars, shared his own perspective.

"Independence Day has always been very special to us. It's a time when we recognize our freedoms, and the times that we fought for it in the different wars. It's just all worthwhile," said Walker.

After the parade, kids were invited to take part in other activities and enjoy a popsicle or two.
