Ivy Tech Lafayette leads way on GED testing

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Ivy Tech campuses across the state are following the lead of Lafayette's campus by serving as a testing site for people who want to get their GED.

Ivy Tech Workforce Certification Manager Shirley Siovaila said 73 people have taken the computer-based format at the Lafayette campus since the pilot program began last February. Siovaila said fewer than 100 people took the pencil-and-paper format the year before computer testing was allowed.

At $120, the computer-based format is $50 more expensive.

But Siovaila said the greater flexibility under the new format is worth it. Test takers have 60 days to pass the five sections of the test. Testing scores are immediately provided for all but one section.

"I find it exciting," Siovaila said. "I am really pleased that we're able to offer it. It provides the flexibility for people to come test that otherwise would have to take time off work can come now more on their own schedule."

Logansport and Lafayette are two area Ivy Tech campuses which offer GED testing. The Crawfordsville campus does not.
