TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - Instead of the orange and navy, it was a sea of pink at Harrison's opening football game Friday night. Pink shirts, pink body paint, and even pink carnations -- all in memory of Maya Getz.
According to the Marion County Coroner's office, Maya died Wednesday night after suffering brain damage. She was involved in an ATV wreck last weekend. She would have been a freshman at Harrison.
Her fellow Raiders paid their respects with a candle vigil and a moment of silence before Friday night's kick off.
Maya was a part of the cheerleading squad. In her honor, the squad led cheers saying, "We Love Maya." They were even presented flowers by the opposing Westfield cheerleaders.
The Harrison Raiderettes dedicated their halftime performance to Maya, saying it was all for Maya and the three other Harrison girls involved in the ATV crash.
"Everyone around us, even the rival schools around here are all supporting the girls. It's been really tough for everyone and everyone's trying to do their best to get through it," said Raiderette Captain, Bailey Sliger.
"With all the stress the first week back and to have this thrown on top of it, just all kinds of emotions going through their minds. It was just a great way to show their support for their families and friends," said Coach Brittany Morrison.
NewsChannel 18 spoke with Maya's mother Friday evening. She said she hopes her daughter's legacy will be that parents and teens will be more safe and cautious when using ATVs.
