LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Remains were found near I-65 on Saturday, but it seems that an initial analysis of those remains has been delayed.
The remains were found by a group of volunteers searching for a Lafayette woman, 46-year-old Nicole Howard, who was reported missing by her family on July 22.
The searchers canvassed a mile-wide area of Veterans Memorial Parkway on Saturday near where Howard's empty pickup truck had been found earlier in the week.
The group found bones and tissue, but it is not known if they belong to Howard or even to a human being.
On Monday morning, Lieutenant Tom Davidson Lafayette Police said nothing had been released from their office regarding whether the remains were animal or human.
Davidson said reports from other media outlets listing the remains as human were communicating unconfirmed information.
A autopsy pathologist was intially expected to inspect the remains this afternoon to determine the species. The autopsy is currently set for Monday evening, with the pathologist determining what tests should be run by tomorrow.
Anyone that has seen Howard, or may have information to help locate her is asked to contact Detective Scott Galloway at the Lafayette Police at (765) 807-1200. You can also call the WE-TIP Hotline at 1-800-78CRIME.
