LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson says the letters are from Americans for Limited Government.
The letter lists an individual's name, address and voter participation for 2008, 2010 and 2012. The letter also lists names of an individual's neighbors and whether or not they voted in past elections. Many Hoosiers who've received the letters say the voting information is incorrect.
Lawson says she believes the intent of the letters is to have individuals contact their neighbors and encourage them to vote.
She says the state strictly limits voting records and did not release this information.
"Really the voter just needs to pitch the letter," Lawson said. "It does not mean anything at all. So they just need to throw it away and remember that is not information that is coming from the state."
Lawson says the state has tried contacting Americans for Limited Government.
She says she hasn't heard back from the organization located in Virginia because of power outages related to Hurricane Sandy.
