LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Sergeant Andy Cree said he sees more day time break-ins around the holidays.
Cree said if you're heading out of town, it may be a good idea to tell your neighbors so they can keep an eye on your house.
Leaving lights on or setting them to a timer and locking doors and windows will also help prevent break-ins.
"Make sure your house is secure and when you leave, leave exterior lights on because one thing we've found through the years of just police experience is the fact that if there's a dark home that's poorly lit next to a house that's brightly lit chances are the one's that dark will end up having something stolen," Cree said.
Cree said if you plan on being gone for a while it might be a good idea to have your mail stopped. Piled up mail can also alert burglars a house is empty.
