WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Snowy weather didn't stop some from an outdoor morning swim on Saturday.
Hundreds of participants, including West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis, lined up for this year's polar plunge at Purdue University.
Proceeds for the event will go to the Special Olympics, to help provide training, equipment, uniforms, and other services.
With nearly twice as many participants this year versus last year, Polar Plunge Co-Chair Lynne Noble said this event means a lot to the athletes.
"It's amazing to them," said Noble. "Special Olympics for many of these athletes is the only time where they are actually involved and they are up front. A lot of times, they are in the background looking and watching things. Here, they are the stars and they are the ones that shine."
Noble estimates approximately $50,000 was raised during the event.
