LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Downtown Lafayette lit up with hundreds of balloons and people taking a step forward to fight for a good cause Thursday night.

It was the annual Light the Night walk to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Participants carry balloons with meaning behind the colors: white for survivors, red for supporters, gold in memory of those who died.

Organizers hope to raise $76,000.

It's an annual tradition for the "Angels in the Outfield" group, formed in part to remember Caroline Newgent.

Caroline was just 5 and a half when she died in 2008 from leukemia. Her mother Karri said it's a fun night to tell stories, let Caroline's memory live on and do some good at the same time.

"The hope is that the money is used for good, that other people don't have to go through what we went through," Karri Newgent said. "Because there are so many people whose lives are touched by cancer that if we can do something positive out of the negative, that's our whole goal."

About 55 groups and 500 participants took part including a News 18 team, which included reporters Holly Campbell, Krista Henery and Kelly Roberts and photojournalist David DeLong.
