Hundreds head to Indianapolis for rally

Union workers get on the bus hoping for change

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Thousands of people converged on the statehouse Thursday, March 10, 2011 for the “Stand Up For Hoosiers” rally. Union workers showed up before the sun, armed with signs, and poised to make a difference. Some came dressed to stand out, others carried their signs hoping to making a difference. In all more than 200 people stepped up and got on the bus.

Union workers Doug Herr said the strength in numbers is a good feeling.

"It is heartening, it seemed like we going to have far fewer than we ended up with,” Herr said. “We had more people call at the last minute."

Right-to-Work legislation has been the reason for recent rallies. Herr said workers are so strongly opposed because of what similar legislation has meant for states like Oklahoma.

"Lawmakers told them they would be making $73 more per week, also it would bring jobs to the state,” Herr said. “They have lost more than 36 thousand jobs since 2001, the income has gone down. That means there is less revenue going to the state."

Herr said the men and women who packed the bus were not just fighting against Right-to-Work legislation and how it could affect union workers, they were also taking a stand for education. Herr said the group continues to gain momentum.

"We will just keep at it.,” Herr said. “We will go one day longer than what it takes. We intend to prevail."
