Human trafficking forum educates those who work with children

LAFAYETTE, Ind.(WLFI) - People in Greater Lafayette who work with children learned the signs of human trafficking to protect kids in the area.

A forum held at Big Brothers, Big Sisters Wednesday, helped educate people about the dangers of human trafficking, or the illegal trade of people.

The Indiana Youth Institute along with the Indiana Nonprofit Resource Network hosted the forum. Organizers said human trafficking is a growing criminal business and has potential to hit close to home.

"I think what we really want to get across is how relevant it is," Stephan Gill, with the Indiana Youth Institute, said. "It's a topic that can affect communities across America. It's important we educate, and bring it to the forefront of youth workers."

The Department of Justice reports the average age range of human trafficking victims is 12 to 14.
