House fire pulls crews to Lafayette's south side

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Lafayette firefighters are investigating the cause of a house fire on the city's southeast side.

It happened around 5:15 p.m. on the 2500 block of Shasta Drive.

Firefighters said when they arrived on the scene, there was heavy smoke coming out from the back of the house. With the vehicle in the driveway, at first, they thought there might be people inside so they called out an extra alarm.

But Lafayette Fire Department (LFD) Capt. Mike Tribbett said firefighters later determined no one was home.

"Oh, it's a big relief. You never know 100 percent if you have someone in there or not," Capt. Tribbett said. "When they heard the call came in, everybody was just a little more hopped up than usual. Because when someone seems to think there is definitely in there, then you get a little bit more jacked up. They did a fabulous job."

Firefighters said some repairs were being done to the home.

They said there is significant damage to the back of the house along with the attic.
