TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - On Sunday, the Tippecanoe County Historical Association commemorated a battle they said changed nations.
The group invited speakers and re-enacters to the 201st anniversary of the Battle of Tippecanoe. The original battle was held on Nov. 7, 1811, at the battlefield in what is now Battle Ground.
The battle was between the forces of William Henry Harrison and Tecumseh for the Prophetstown land. Historians consider it the first battle in the War of 1812.
"The local community of Tippecanoe County, especially the newer ones, don't realize what we have here and the importance of this battle," said Historical Association Executive Director Kathy Atwell. "We like to say it changed nations."
The War of 1812 eventually set the boundaries that separate Canada from the United States. Members of the historical association started hosting the commemoration in the 1990s, and said they will continue to do so every year.
