WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Indiana Senator for District 7, Brandt Hershman , is contemplating a run for Congress.
Speaking at the Tippecanoe County Republican Womens' Club annual meeting on Saturday, Hershman spoke about policy, the future of the Republican party, and the recent announcement of Steve Buyer's retirement . Hershman said he's received a lot of support to run in Buyer's place.
"I've been talking about it with my family and with supporters around the 4th district just to gauge a level of interest and whether this is something I believe I could add value in representing the people of Indiana. I've received a great deal of encouragement. Obviously the opportunity to file is closing soon. We'll talk it over and have a decision in the very near future," said Hershman.
Hershman said he's worked with Buyer for more than 18 years and is 'like family' to Buyer's family.
"I've watched their kids grow up and watched the challenges they faced both with Steve as a member of Congress and Joni helping to raise the kids in a very charged environment. They're great people. And so, it's with sympathy and support that Lisa and I both try and support them through this very difficult time," said Hershman.
He added the Buyer's have received an 'outpouring of support.'
"Obviously it's a very difficult time for their family. But they have many friends throughout this community. They're very appreciative of all those expressions of support. It's an important time for them to be together as a family but it is certainly encouraging to them to hear from so many people in the community," said Hershman.
Hershman said he's thinking about if a job in Washington is right for him.
"I have been very encouraged by all the expressions of support I have received for a potential run. I'm interested in the opportunity to take some of the successes Indiana has had in reforming government to Washington to be a constructive part of that debate. We just need to make sure it's the right thing for our family and for the community," said Hershman.
February 19 is the deadline for all offices to file runs for candidacy.
