WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Can you hear a book? Students at Harrison High School did just that Wednesday.

Wednesday was World Read Aloud Day.

Teachers and other volunteers read books aloud to students throughout the day to foster interest in leisure reading.  Read Aloud Day is an event put together by the School Improvement Committee.  One of the goals of the committee is to improve reading comprehension throughout the student body.

School Improvement Committee Co-Chair Michelle Coors said the program is fun for students and teachers.

"The kids, when you sit down in the chair and you start reading, all of a sudden, it's like this elementary school nostalgia comes back because they're grouped and they get to hear a story read which is different than what is typical in a high school."

Harrison hopes to have all 1,700 students in a reading program next year.
