LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Annual Labor Day festival benefited Hanna Community Center programs.
Hannafest, now in it's 28th year, raised funds for the center with a car show, vendors, games, a basketball tournament, and more.
The festival was smaller than some of the other Lafayette festivals, but promoted a strong sense of community.
"Well I think Hannafest is just really down in the neighborhood. I mean it really goes out to the whole community, but it really is a neighborhood festival. It brings a lot of people from a lot of different places. There is really that sense of community and being relaxed," said Mayor of Lafayette Tony Roswarski. Roswarksi said he had been coming to the festival for years.
"Community stuff, it's just fun. My kids came here for the summer and I have a barbershop here so I like playing in a lot of tournaments here and being out with the people," said basketball tournament participant, Michael Johnson. Johnson said his children enjoyed all of the family friendly activities.
The center provides many programs for school-aged children and senior citizens. All proceeds raised from today's festival will go towards funding these programs. Volunteers at the Hanna Center said programs like after school tutoring are very important to maintain for the community.
"They (kids) all come here after school, and after school who wants to work? They just want to play and run around. But because we're so willing to be there for them they are able to ask the questions they need to ask. Like they might be afraid to raise their hands or something and here they can be like 'Hey I need help with this math problem.' And I think whats good for them is we work with them and play with them," said volunteer and tutor, Sloane Bowman.
The Hanna Center hoped to raise between $7,000- $10,000 from this year's Hannafest.
