Handicapped-accessible playground dedicated at Columbian Park

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Columbian Park is officially open for children in wheelchairs and those with other disabilities.

Lafayette and Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) officials dedicated the handicapped accessible portion of the park in a ceremony Friday afternoon.  The equipment was purchased and installed with $70,000 raised from last year's SIA Community walk/run.

Children with disabilities have been able to use the equipment since work was complete at the end of June, but the initial date for the dedication was delayed because of bad weather.

"The playground was an ideal place to add to the community, and really takes a barrier down that had existed for those with disabilities, and allow children of all ages and abilities to play," said SIA executive Tom Easterday.

This year's SIA Community walk-run is set for October 13.

All proceeds from this year's event will be used to help build the SIA Safe Haven Home, an emergency shelter for families displaced by fire, natural disaster or domestic violence.
