Halloween safety's ties to sex offender information

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - While some kids are starting to hit the streets to trick-or-treat, the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office is reminding parents to be aware of neighborhoods and those who live there.

Law enforcement officials said while many registered sex offenders are not ordered to do anything different around this time of year, parents can still keep a close on on them all by a click of a mouse.

"During the Halloween time frame, what we try to do is put the information out to road officers who visit these folks on a regular basis and then maybe they can stop by the residence and check on them during those time frames," Lieutenant Daniel McGrew with the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office said.

As the sheriff's office is keeping a close eye on these registered offenders, law enforcement officials are reminding parents to do their homework before sending their children out to trick-or-treat.

"We recommend that you go to Indiana's sheriff's association website or i-crime watch dot net and take a look at the physical address and be familiar with your area and see if there are sex offenders near by," Lieutenant McGrew said.

"The sex offender page has popped up and I have gone across and seen a few neighborhoods that we will stand clear from," Lafayette parent Jessica Murray said.

"It's a pretty important tool for parents to use and I've done that a couple of times throughout the year just to see who is registered and where they live," Lafayette parent Grant Fischer said.

While some parents said they're familiar with the website, they said they're also familiar with the route they plan to use while taking their children trick-or-treating.

"I've been going to the same neighborhood probably since I was a kid so we stay with normally the same group of people," Lafayette parent Jamie Smith said.
