WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Monday marks the kick off to Boiler Gold Rush as 5,200 new freshmen learn the ropes of Purdue University.
New Purdue president Governor Mitch Daniels was there to welcome the students. The freshman class learned chants and cheers with a little help from the Purdue Cheerleaders, the Marching Band and Purdue Pete.
Governor Daniels said because this is both his and the 2012 freshman class's first year at Purdue, he has a special bond with them.
"I told them that my fondest hope is that I see all of them assembled again in four years," said Governor Daniels. "Meaning, that they have worked hard and that the school has done what it needs to do to make it possible for them to finish on time."
Although Governor Daniels is a huge sports fan, Monday was his first time inside Mackey Arena. He said it is an historic building and can't wait to enjoy sporting events inside.
